Looking and Sounding Good

A man participating in a virtual meeting on a laptop, with multiple people visible on the screen.

If you’re asked for an interview, the chances are it will be done over Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp or FaceTime. MediaMouth offers a bespoke service to make you look as good and sound as good as you possibly can.

How It Can All Go Wrong

A man participating in a video conference on a laptop at a round wooden table in a room with patterned wallpaper, a leather armchair, and a stained glass window in the background.

In the picture above, the man in the picture appears in the top left of his laptop screen - so we can see how he’s appearing to the people he’s talking to.

  • If a laptop is too low, your eyes appear half-shut throughout the interview. You can buy a riser - or, much easier: stick a few books underneath it.

  • A busy background detracts the viewer from looking at and listening to you. Behind him there’s a mirror on the wall and he’s boxed into the corner of the room.

  • Laptop microphones are generally awful. A microphone costs under £20.

  • Likewise an earpiece costs very little - about £15.

  • While this man is facing a window so is being lit naturally, there are shadows on his face caused by the low angle of the camera.

  • If you’re being interviewed, nobody is going to be checking your clothing. Just because you’re being interviewed at home doesn’t mean you should be looking like you WFH. Get a shirt on and don’t slouch!

Look at the following:

  • Eyeline

  • “Busy” wallpaper

  • Using laptop microphone

  • Not using an earpiece

  • Lighting

  • Clothing
