How To Look Good And Keep People Watching

Most interviews are now on Zoom, Teams, WhatsApp or FaceTime

…and most people get it wrong.

Not because it’s difficult but because no one’s shown them what actually matters.

This video shows an internal laptop camera versus an external webcam.

Can spot which is which?

How It Can All Go Wrong

A man participating in a video conference on a laptop at a round wooden table in a room with patterned wallpaper, a leather armchair, and a stained glass window in the background.

Eyeline
The laptop is too low.
That means you’re looking down — and your eyes look half closed. Just raise the laptop - books will do.

Background
There’s too much going on.
The mirror, the corner, the clutter — it all distracts. You should be the focus.

Audio
Laptop microphones are poor. A simple external mic makes an immediate difference.

Earpiece
Without one, you risk echo and feedback and it makes conversation much harder.

Lighting
The low angle creates shadows. Light your face properly because that’s what people are looking at.

Clothing
You might be at home.
That doesn’t mean you should look like it. Dress properly, sit properly.

People won’t analyse this consciously but they will notice it and decide, very quickly, how seriously they take you.
